Ten Trouble-Free Tips for Travelers

Safety is one of the most important things to consider as you pack your car and leave home. To help you get ready for your next road trip, the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) recommends these 10 tips for travelers:

At home

1. Check all the locks before you leave home. Each door and window should have a sturdy lock.

2. Use motion-detection lights outside and trim hedges to reduce potential hiding places for burglars.

3. Set automatic timers on a few interior lights to give the impression that someone is home.

4. Ask the post office to hold your mail or ask a trusted friend or neighbor to collect it while you are away. Do the same with home delivery of newspapers.

On the road

5. Pay attention to your surroundings.

6. Pick well lit gas stations and always remove your keys and lock the car doors while you are pumping gas.

7. Protect your valuables (GPS, MP3 players, cell phones) by keeping them out of plain view in your vehicle and lock the doors even if you are stepping away from the vehicle for just a moment.

8. Take only the credit and other cards you will need. Leave the others at home, stored securely.

9. Never leave your hotel room unlocked, even to go to the ice or vending machine.

10. Don’t open the door at a hotel or at home to someone who you don’t know well or trust.

It’s important, too, not to forget the basics: buckle your seatbelt and keep your eyes on the road. Driving is a skill that requires your full attention to safely control your vehicle and respond to the events happening on the roads around you.

One of you may not be like the others

I know that no two people are alike. For instance, some people love to talk on the phone, while the mere thought of a phone chat makes others nervous. Many people prefer to do everything on the computer, while some like an old-fashioned face-to-face meeting.  In my experience, it isn’t different from generation, but there are some from every generation that use the computer and the same for face-to-face meetings.

And that’s cool with me. You can get in touch with me any way you want. We’re always here for you, to answer questions about your policy, make a change to your coverage, or file a claim. Personalized attention is never more than a phone call, email or even a text message away.

Just please remember, that coverage can’t be bound, cancelled or changed without speaking with an agency representative.

Should I fight my speeding ticket?

North Carolina has an insurance point system call the “Safe Drivers Incentive Plan” that can significantly increase your auto insurance rates.  Points are assessed when you receive a moving violation or an at-fault in an accident.  These points can be very costly and stay on your record for three years.  Violations range from 1 point to 12 points.

Below are a few examples of speeding violations and points.

  • Speed 0-10 MPH over, Limit < 55=1 pt
  • Speed 0-10 MPH over, Limit 55+=2 pts
  • Speed 11+ MPH over, Speed < 56 MPH.=1 pt
  • Speed 11+ MPH over, Speed is 56 – 75 MPH=2 pts
  • Speed 76+ MPH. Limit < 70=4 pts
  • Speed 81+ MPH. Limit 70+ =4 pts

This was a quote I prepared for someone but they didn’t know how many points they had so I gave them the following quotes.

Points          Annual Premium
0                     $964.02
1                     $1,132.52
2                     $1,221.27
3                     $1,304.07

If you look at the above premium differences and this person had 2 points for speeding, they would pay almost $260 a year for 3 years.  It may have been worth the money to see if an attorney could have gotten the violation reduced to “improper equipment” or another violation that doesn’t assess points.

Not All Homeowners Insurance is Created Equal

Most homeowners policies sold in North Carolina by the big three are HO3′s.  The HO3 is a good policy, but Erie Insurance offers an HE7 which gives many enhancements that you can’t get with an HO3.  One of the biggest differences is the coverage provided to Personal Property or Contents.  With an HO3, you only get what is known as “Named Perils” but with an HE7 you get “Comprehensive Perils” which in a nutshell means that everything is covered except what is directly excluded in the policy.  If you think Sewer and Drain Backup Coverage is something you may need, then you can go with an HE7 plus 21 which has this coverage built into the policy.

For a brief summary of other differences please check out our Homeowners Policy Comparison Sheet at http://www.abc-insure.com/homeowners-comparison.pdf.
